The Mexican Collection
The Twenty Four Italian Songs and Arias remain a foundational resource for the modern voice studio. However, as explored in the article Rethinking the Italian Twenty Four Songs and Arias Exploring Classical Vocal Literature Selection Through the Lens of bel canto Technique published in the Journal of Singing, familiarity does not always equal functional organization. While these Baroque pieces are beloved, they often lack a strategic sequence tailored to the actual physical and musical skills required to master the art of singing. The Canciones Project is proud to extend this mission through our newest resource 24 Mexican Songs and Arias: A Pedagogic Resource Based on the Bel Canto Practices of Vocal Development.
A Collaborative Vision
This collection represents an intentional international partnership. Dr. Melissa Lubeck Sarabia and I curated these editions alongside distinguished Mexican song specialists and native practitioners to ensure absolute cultural and stylistic integrity. We are deeply grateful for the expertise of Claudia Hernandez from the Conservatory of Roses in Morelia, Mexico, Dr. Charbel Yubaile of the Ponce Project, and Vocologist Julieta García Reyes.
Pedagogical Scaffolding
The ordering of this collection follows the same evidence based principles established in our Journal of Singing research and our Bel Canto Italian Collection. Rather than a chronological list, Melissa and I have sequenced these selections to support progressive vocal development inspired by the traditional bel canto masters. By scaffolding technical difficulty, we allow teachers to address the core fundamentals of the singing voice including legato, registration balance, and vowel modification within a linguistically authentic framework.
This approach ensures that students spend their time in the studio performing music that promotes vocal health and stylistic success. We focus on the vocal idioms of Mexican Canción Romántica and Modernismo, moving away from the complex instrumental idioms often found in early Baroque literature that can be taxing for the developing singer.

The Canciones Project offers a full toolkit for every selection to make this heritage repertoire accessible for teachers and students alike:
